E-commerce and Web hosting solution provider NetNation Communications Wednesday announced that the company was selected as an official registrar of Internet domain names by the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Vancouver-based NetNation will commence operations as an official registrar after the
initial testbed phase of the Shared Registry System, which is expected to be
completed by July 9, 1999.
Until recently, Network
Solutions held sole authority to register domain names
ending in .com, .net, and .org, which account for 50-75 percent of all
Internet addresses. Last year, the U.S. Commerce Department appointed ICANN to open up
competition and to oversee the privatization of the Net’s daily maintenance.
“This will give NetNation an important revenue stream and at the same time
business customers will reap the benefits of increased competition and
innovation.” said David Talmor, president and CEO of NetNation.
“We will continue to work closely with NSI through this important transition
period and beyond.”

The company’s domain registration services unit has grown rapidly, registering more than 18,000 domain names for customers in 90 countries.
