Newspaper Publisher Raises Curtain on “canada.com”

Southam New Media, Canada’s largest publisher of daily newspapers, unveiled its extensive new flagship canada.com Web site this week.

In partnership with Inktomi, the manufacturer of award-winning search engine technology, canada.com will help navigate surfers to more than 110 million Internet and Web documents, the largest search capacity of any Canadian online search engine, according to Southam.

“Our goal is to help Canadians get the most from their online experience–quickly and easily,” said Michael Pilmer, Director of Southam New Media. “This means providing an Internet site that is useful, convenient and
comprehensive–a resource that decreases the amount of time and effort spent
searching through the sea of information on the Web.”

To complement the search engine, canada.com offers a one-stop source for
answers to specific information needs. These include:

  • News Cafi–features the largest number of current Canadian and
    international news sources.
  • Eh Mail–allows users to set up free accounts that can be accessed
directly from the canada.com page, from any Net-enabled PC.
  • TheTrip.com–provides access to Internet travel reservations and information.
  • Hello Yellow–a complete online business directory. Through simple keyword searches, users are provided with phone numbers, addresses, and maps.

The site also features access to weather, TV listings, horoscopes, comics, lottery results, polls, chat, and a national forum.
