Singapore Telecom (SingTel) will launch an
Internet-based fax system in the island republic. The service, FaxPlus
Connect, will link e-mail and faxing over an IP-based network.

Ken Tan, director of value added services at Singapore Telecom, said the
company plans to offer this service to overseas customers.

“We are already having discussions with many telecommunication service
providers in Hong Kong and other Asian countries,” he said, adding the
service will be launched upon the final nod from the Government.

The SingTel service, developed by NetCentric, will allow customers to
consolidate their facsimile and data operations. Company officials said
FaxPlus Connect is designed to be integrated into a network’s operational
infrastructure.

“Customers, whose networks can be easily linked to our system, will be able
to automate their faxing process,” said Tan. “They would not have to set up
and maintain fax servers, thus reducing investments in hardware and network
costs.”
