Interscope Geffen A&M Records, a
division of the Universal Music Group, on Friday sealed a deal with NeoPlanet Inc. to provide fans of its
musical groups with custom versions of Web browsers.
The idea is to cement fans’ relationships with the bands — in this case Beck, Big Bad
Voodoo Daddy, and No Doubt — and
allow the record label to promote its products and services. A version for
Eminem is planned for later this
summer. All of these bands are popular with Generation X and Generation Y
— individuals who are also likely to be comfortable with using the Internet.
The custom Web browsers, which have unique interfaces with artist-oriented
sounds and images, are being distributed for free from artist Web sites.
The browsers also feature direct links to the artist’s online properties,
other enhanced navigational elements, integrated search and e-mail, and the
ability to customize the look and feel of the browser.
“These browsers offer loyal fans a unique and fun way to navigate the
Internet,” said Courtney Holt of Interscope Geffen A&M Records.
“By enabling a closer relationship to the user, the browsers also help us
develop a more direct and lasting relationship with our audiences. We’re
excited to work with NeoPlanet in this approach to building our online
community.”
Interscope Geffen A&M Records’ other artists include U2, The Wallflowers,
Dr. Dre, Sting, Sheryl Crow, Limp Bizkit, and Enrique Iglesias.
