Spammers Flood GTE E-Mail Service

Jan 2, 1998

GTE’s business e-mail service experienced a
holiday meltdown this past week from a storm of spam, according to Media Daily.

The service actually had to take its system down for a day to resolve the
problem.

GTE, which provides e-mail services to some 600 small and mid-size
businesses, said it had been experiencing e-mail backlogs since before
Christmas, when large spam volumes directed to its customers crashed GTE’s
server.

Service was restored last Tuesday, but e-mail backlogs persisted.
