Business travelers itching to stay connected to their companies’ networks now have another option beyond Wi-Fi to gain high-speed wireless Internet access, thanks to Verizon Wireless and Novatel Wireless.
The companies announced the availability of the V620 Wireless PC Card, which allows business users to wirelessly access data using Verizon’s high-speed 3G Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network.
The card, which is manufactured by Novatel , uses dual-band EV-DO and 1xRTT
BroadbandAccess, which Verizon Wireless launched
in September in 11 cities, is now available in 32 metropolitan markets throughout the United States. The company said it plans to open up the network in 2005 to non-business users.
“Verizon Wireless subscribers can not only access e-mail and the Internet without the hassle of cables or finding a nearby hotspot,” said Cindy Patterson, vice president of enterprise data for Verizon Wireless, in a
statement. “But they can also use the V620 to transfer files and access data saved on corporate networks.”

Included with the V620 Wireless PC Card is Verizon Wireless’ VZAccess Manager software, the companies said. Once users have installed the
software, they can then plug the V620 card into their laptops to access the
BroadbandAccess network, which offers speeds of about 300 kilobits per
second to 500 kbps.
Novatel Wireless, a provider of wireless broadband access solutions that
delivers 3G solutions to operators, distributors and vertical markets
globally, views its partnership with Verizon as an opportunity to break into
a new market.
“This relationship enhances Novatel Wireless’ North American market
leadership by providing our next generation PC Card modem technology to
mobile workers and consumers through market leaders like Verizon Wireless,”
said Peter Leparulo, CEO of Novatel Wireless, in a statement.
Verizon Wireless charges $79.99 for unlimited monthly access for its
BroadbandAccess service. The V620 costs $99.99 after $100 mail in rebate and
a two-year customer agreement. It will be available Jan. 17 through Verizon
Wireless’ business sales channels. The companies expect to offer the PC Card
through Verizon Wireless Communications stores on Jan. 24.
