Intrinsyc Software, Inc. said Thursday that its Cerf PDA reference design for handhelds is now available.

The company said the handheld is aimed at applications in which widely-used handhelds are too general for specialized applications. It said the reference design can be specialized for use in specialized consumer applications as well as for in-vehicle, data collection, and test and measurement applications.

The design can be customized with features such as wired and wireless local area networking and Bluetooth capabilities and location-based services. It specifically includes support for 802.11b wireless networks, the company said. It optionally can have a rugged housing for industrial applications.

The device is available for Windows CE and Linux. It uses an Intel StrongARM-1110 microprocessor and includes a 3.8-inch color display. The company provided no information about pricing.
