In the year ahead, consumers and businesses will purchase more smartphones and tablets than traditional PCs, according to professional services firm Deloitte.

The company has made a habit of publishing reports offering predictions of the prevailing currents reshaping the technology and telecom sectors.

This year, vendors figure to ship more mobile devices of a fundamentally different architecture than traditional PCs.

“Unlike the 2009 netbook phenomenon, where buyers chose machines that were essentially less powerful versions of traditional PCs, the 2011 computing market will be dominated by devices that use different processing chips and operating systems than those used for PCs over the past 30 years,” Deloitte said in its report.

Datamation takes a look at the projection of the surge in mobile devices.
