Finisar has announced that it has updated its industry leading performance monitoring system, SAN QoS, to version 2.0. SAN QoS provides detailed and accurate continuous full line rate monitoring of 1 and 2 Gb Fibre Channel SAN Traffic. With the new tools, Finisar says that SAN managers now have access to the critical information that assist to quickly address data transfer latency and load balancing problems to ensure optimum Fibre Channel SAN performance and uptime. Additional new features of version 2.0 include browser-based reporting, alarm notification, and integration of Finisar’s 8 port optical tap. These features enable the customer to monitor many links using only one probe while reducing cost per port.

With Finisar’s SAN QoS, SAN managers can monitor “end-device” I/O transactions, enabling accurate accounting of SAN utilization. The SAN QoS architecture monitors Fibre Channel link traffic enabling it to be compatible with all SAN vendor equipment. This level of hardware independence is unique within the industry and well suited for heterogeneous SAN environments.

“As the importance of Storage Area Networks (SANs) grow, SAN managers must ensure reliable SAN performance and maximize return on investment through accurate performance tuning and capacity planning.” said Bob Otis, Vice President of Engineering, Finisar SAN LAN Performance Tools Division. “With SAN QoS Version 2.0, we provide SAN managers with the key metrics needed to maximize SAN uptime,” added Otis.

SAN QoS automatically summarizes data over configurable time periods from minutes to months. Recordings can also be made to store all of the metrics for any interval, from minutes to days. Playback of recordings or summaries enable in-depth analysis of traffic anomalies utilizing the same intuitive graphical views available in Run-Time mode. SAN QoS recordings can be started manually or triggered by User Defined Alarm conditions. If a Recording is in progress, subsequent User Alarms create bookmarks in the recording file for easy playback navigation right to the periods of concern.
