Quantum Announces Portable NAS Appliance

Quantum Corp. today introduced the Snap Server 1100, a Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliance that provides up to 80GB of storage in a portable, desktop configuration.

According to Quantum, the new Snap Server 1100 boasts nearly 70 percent faster throughput and 50 percent faster response time than its predecessor, the Snap Server 1000. Like all Snap Server products, Quantum said the Snap Server 1100 delivers full, multi-platform file sharing in mixed Windows, NetWare, UNIX, Linux and Macintosh environments.

Quantum said the Snap Server 1100 is powered by the new Snap Operating System (OS) v3.4, which leverages Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory environments. The Snap OS v3.4 also offers AppleShare network users compatibility with the newest Mac OS X v10.1.2 and UNIX NFS users group-level security and management. The company also said the new Snap OS v3.4 also brings Java technology onto the Snap Server 1100, allowing customers to run applications such as Quantum’s Server-to-Server Synchronization software.

In related news, Quantum announced it has increased the storage capacities for the one rack unit (1U) tall Snap Server 4100. The company said the Snap Server 4100 provides RAID 5 protected storage in three capacity points. The highest of which is now 480 gigabytes.
