Rorke’s New IDE-to-SCSI 3 RAID Earns OEM Approval

Bell Microproducts, Inc. subsidiary Rorke Data, Inc. today announced that its new Galaxy-i(TM) series of desktop and rackmount RAID solutions for data-intensive environments, such as digital video editing, effects creation, and streaming media production for the Internet, has received compatibility endorsements from Spruce, Matrox, Pinnacle, DPS (Digital Processing Systems), and Media 100. The Galaxy- series began shipping in March.

Joe Rorke, Rorke’s VP Marketing, said, “This is the first low-cost, high-performance, fully fault-tolerant RAID 3 configuration to be offered to the A/V industry. Now editors can get the same performance — with full data protection — for the same price as traditional JBOD’s or striped arrays. This is a major improvement that safeguards our users from having to re-digitize their content in the event of a disk failure.”

According to Rorke, the Galaxy-i series RAID systems incorporate the latest IDE-to-Ultra 3 interface (Fibre-Channel available 2nd Quarter 2001). Galaxy-i models range in capacity from 216GB to 600GB, and offer data rates that range from 80MB/sec. up to 160MB/sec. Supporting disks from 45GB to 76GB, the Galaxy-i enclosures utilize SCA backplane technology in a six-bay tower or eight-bay rackmount, and can reach capacities over 600GB in a single unit. The systems support RAID levels of 0, 1 (0+1), 3 and 5, utilize six removable disk drives, and offer two removable, redundant, hot-swappable power supplies.
