Siemens Toasts Good Health

Healthcare providers looking for online solutions to professional difficulties such as patient safety issues, financial concerns, clinical staffing shortages and regulatory compliance, can get assistance from a new information system introduced today.

Soarian, a healthcare information solution developed by Siemens Medical Solutions Health Services Corp., the Malvern, Penn.-based division of Siemens Medical Solutions , is hoping to put paid to a plethora of challenges faced by those working in the healthcare industry.

“Our customers are beset with challenges ranging from staffing shortages, squeezed financial margins, internal demand for return on IT investment, and concerns about HIPAA compliance, as well as pressure from the Institute of Medicine and The Leapfrog Group regarding patient safety issues,” says Dr. Erich Reinhardt, president and chief executive officer of Siemens Medical Solutions.

She says these issues prompted the development of Soarian, which has been built leveraging Siemens’ development capabilities in countries including Scandinavia, Germany, the U.S. and India: “Soarian leverages the global resources of Siemens and supports our mission of combining expertise in medical devices with our extensive knowledge of information technology. By focusing on workflow across the health continuum, Soarian can ensure that information is available at the point of care,” she argues.

According to Francis W. Lavelle, president and chief executive officer of Siemens Medical Solutions Health Services Corporation: “In addition to helping healthcare providers save time and money, Soarian also helps to promote patient safety by orchestrating all aspects of healthcare workflow – administrative, diagnostic, clinical and financial,” he says.

Built for the Web, Soarian provides services including implementation, change management and workflow improvement and it is the first solution to be built under the firm’s ISO 9001 certification. The system is being initially launched to the U.S. market. Introduction of Soarian internationally is expected during 2002.

An integrated part of Siemens Medical Solutions, Siemens Medical Solutions Health Services Corp., offers several clinical, financial, and management applications aimed at increasing efficiency of the healthcare system while improving the quality of care to patients worldwide. The company operates health applications for over 1,000 health providers with connections to over 500,000 customer workstations.
