Indonesia Chooses Motorola for 3G Network

Indonesia’s largest telecommunications carrier has chosen wireless player Motorola to provide next generation wireless services to the ten provinces of Sumatra.

PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia said it would use Motorola’s CDMA2000 1X system , which will bring 3G, or third generation wireless services to a major swath of Indonesia. Sumatra is one of Indonesia’s largest groups of islands with forty million residents.

Motorola’s contract in Indonesia is its fifteenth 3G deal signed around the world and seventh in the Asia-Pacific region. The initial phase of the wireless network rollout is estimated to be worth close to $30 million. The company said the network is set for commercial deployment by this month, and will run on the 800 MHz band.

Motorola’s wireless deployment in Indonesia will build upon existing 2G and 2.5 networks by upgrading to packet-based network technology. PT. Telekom’s
wireless upgrade will be partially achieved by the deployment of an access
node made by Cisco Systems, Inc. , which adds an Internet Protocol layer to the radio access network.

Motorola also said Wednesday that it is working with Hutchison CAT Wireless
Multimedia, Ltd. a joint venture between Hutchison Wireless Multimedia
Holdings, Ltd. and The Communications Authority of Thailand. Motorola’s
Global Telecom Solutions Sector has been selected to implement what it known
as the Network Enabling Services Platform, which is a key element in
Hutchison’s high-speed data delivery architecture.

Motorola said it would use Kabira’s Infrastructure Switch and OSA/Parlay
Gateway, a software platform to help developers cut down on their development time for advanced voice and data services.

The environment, called the Network Enabling Services Platform, sends messages to a system’s WAP Server, Short Message Service Center, Multimedia Message Service Center
and E-mail server.

Both contracts could help Motorola continue its 3G deployment for voice services, while it positions for data services, at a time of explosive popularity of 802.11 wireless networking protocols.
