The Eclipse IDE is a widely used desktop based development tool. The Eclipse Foundation is now moving beyond its desktop roots with the new Orion, browser-based development environment.
As part of the Orion development, Eclipse is hosting a managed implementation of Orion called OrionHub. Developers can try out Orion by way of the OrionHub without the need to establish their own Orion servers.
In addition to the new online home, new features have been making their way into Orion. Among the new features is improved Git integration as well as the ability to create, edit, delete or launch a website for testing.
While interest in Orion is encouraging, there is still lots of work left to be done.
“The next three months or so will be pretty important in making the Orion vision a reality,” Milinkovich said. “So far it looks very promising, but it’s a work in progress and there is always a chance that we won’t get the types of contribution that we want to be successful.”
