Sun Microsystems today announced that for the cost of media, shipping and handling charges it would provide a free license to its Solaris operating environment when used for non-commercial use.
Non-commercial developers can order their copy of the Solaris operating
environment at www.sun.com/developers, while students, educators and researchers should access www.sun.com/edu/solaris to place an order.
“Educators will be able to easily deploy the latest release of Solaris
software across their campuses on systems using the SPARC or Intel architectures,” said Kim Jones, vice president, Academic
and Research Computing, Sun Microsystems.
“This is the ideal complement to the Sun program that offers free Java development tools for teaching. Now those interested in Java technologies can make greater use of the Solaris operating environment in their adventures with the Java programming language.”
The Free Solaris program is being managed through Sun Developer
Connection program, a comprehensive resource designed to give the growing
number and expanding range of Solaris developers a single point of access to all Solaris operating environment and Java technology programs.
Public domain software that is pre-compiled and formatted for easy
installation on all Solaris platforms and releases can be downloaded for free from www.sunfreeware.com.
In addition, Java development tools and
technologies are available from the Java Store on the Web at
java.sun.com/javastore. There are also free Java tools available for use in teaching at
sun.com/edu/java/free.
