The growth in Australian enterprise Internet adoption is continuing at a steady pace according to latest reports from Australian research company www.consult.
The firm found that despite significant growth in the number of leased line
permanent connections, Australian enterprises are still using dial-up
Internet access and analogue leased line connections. www.consult believes
this is because they are taking advantage of the unlimited local call cost.
The reports found that in January this year, there were more than 100,000
lines being used for Internet access in Australia by dial-up and permanent
connections users.
Internet service providers OzEmail and Telstra were the two most
successful suppliers of the enterprise market, with OzEmail at more than 27
per cent and Telstra Big Pond at 20 per cent.
According to www.consult, OzEmail’s early start with dial-up accounts has
driven its advantage in the market. However, the rest of the market
remains fragmented amongst 640 other ISPs in Australia.
Other highlights of the research include the fact that Web
presence has doubled from February 1998 to January 1999, with some 48,000
enterprises being hosted at ISPs with their own domain names, as well as
another 50,000 Web sites being hosted in-house or at a shopping malls or
directories.
OzEmail’s Web hosting partner WebCentral was the clear market leader in
this space with more than 10 per cent of the ISP-hosted market.
In terms of Web software, users are adopting the free software Apache (61
per cent) followed by Microsoft IIS at 25 per cent, according to www.consult.
Other research found that the increase in the Internet for work-related
activities has pushed the business-hours volume traffic peak very close to
the after-hours traffic which reaches its peak at 10pm. Business activities
and business-related research were the second most commonly cited uses of
the Net at 18 per cent, after e-mail at 27 per cent.
The results are based on www.consult’s third Australian Enterprise Internet
and Intranet Survey, the second Australian Web Hosting Report, the sixth
www.consult Online User Survey and the third Techsumer Report.
