Ericsson To Trial WAP Technology With Rogers Cantel

Ericsson Canada Inc. plans to trial Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) technology over a TDMA network with Rogers Cantel, Canada’s largest wireless provider.

The trial will be the first deployment of WAP technology over a TDMA (IS-136) network.

“Wireless Internet is the next wave for wireless communications,” says Vu Nguyen, general manager, Rogers Cantel Account, Ericsson Canada. “WAP technology will enable us to
provide both consumers and enterprises with total wireless solutions that will bring the Internet and its content to their fingertips.”

“Ericsson’s software, hardware and services areas have been an integral part of our success to date, and Rogers Cantel and Ericsson are working together to provide next generation wireless products and services for Canadians,” says Bob Berner, CTO of Rogers Cantel Inc.

Ericsson’s WAP system is based on the JAMBALA platform. The JAMBALA WAP Gateway is targeted at TDMA and CDMA operators globally and is bundled with a range of WAP applications. WAP is considered a first step towards mobile Internet and 3G mobile offerings.
