Internet Comeback Continues

Determined to make up last week’s lost ground, Internet and technology issues turned in another spectacular session Tuesday, leading the Nasdaq to its biggest one-day point gain ever.

internet.com’s Internet Stock Index soared 77.02, or 11.62 percent, to 739.96, the Nasdaq Composite leaped 254.44 to 3,793.60 and the Dow Jones industrial average gained 179.94 to 10,762.45.

Several leaders posted impressive gains, including Ariba Inc. (ARBA), up 10-5/16 to 64-3/4, Akamai Corp. (AKAM), soared 21-1/2 to 90-1/2, eBay Inc. (EBAY), jumped 19-11/16 to 162-15/16 and Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) gained 12-5/16 to 126-11/16.

The e-finance sector also posted strong gains, with Ameritrade Holding Corp. (AMTD) up 2-9/32 to 17-1/8, E*Trade Group Inc. (EGRP), gained 3-5/16 to 21-1/2, Knight/Trimark Group Inc. (NITE) jumped 5-5/16 to 35-3/8 and Charles Schwab Corp. (SCH) ended up 3-5/8 to 45-5/8.

Wit Capital Group Inc. (WITC) gained 1-1/8 to 11-1/2. The Internet investment bank posted its first profit, earnings 8 cents a share in its most recent quarter.

SportsLine.com (SPLN), leaped 3-11/16 to 15-5/16. The company reported first-quarter revenue more than doubled to $23 million.

WebTrends Corp. (WEBT) closed up 2-3/8 to 28-1/4. The company, whose software analyzes Web traffic, reported first-quarter earnings of 5 cents, a penny better than estimates.

Several other leaders are set to report earnings. Inktomi Corp. (INKT) added 24 to 116. The firm, whose software optimizes Internet connections, reports later Tuesday. It is expected to lose 2 cents in its fiscal second quarter compared to a 7-cent loss a year ago.

RealNetworks Inc. (RNWK) gained 7-5/16 to 41-5/16. The streaming media company reports first-quarter earnings after the bell. Analysts are projecting a 4-cent profit.

FreeMarkets Inc. (FMKT) jumped 19-1/4 to 72. The company, which conducts online auctions for businesses, reported revenue in its latest quarter jumped to $10.8 million from $3.5 million a year ago.

EarthLink Networks Inc. (ELNK) leaped 4-1/2 to 16-1/2. Fred Moran of Jefferies & Co. cut his price target from $53 to $27. However, despite the pullback, the new target is substantially higher than its current trading range.

HearMe (HEAR) ended up 3/4 to 8-3/8. The company, which allows individuals to communicate in real-time over the Internet, reported a first-quarter loss of 34 cents, 8 cents better than expected.

America Online Inc. (AOL) added 1-3/4 to 60-1/2. The company reports its fiscal third-quarter results after the market close. Forecasts are for a 9-cent profit.

One company falling on earnings news was Doubleclick Network Inc. (DCLK) lost 8-3/16 to 51-5/8. The Internet ad firm lost $13.2 million, or 11 cents a share in its most recent quarter. That was in line with analyst estimates. Also, CS First Boston upgraded the stock to a “strong buy” from “buy” and set a $90 price target.

Also, Efficient Networks Inc. (EFNT) lost 2-11/16 to 85-5/16. The high-speed equipment maker reported a fiscal third-quarter loss of $54.9 million, or $1.17 a share, up from last year’s $1.17 loss.
