Motorola Monday announced availability of two new Java-based wireless devices that combine telephony, two-way paging and personal information management capabilities.

The company claims its new Motorola i85s and i50sx devices are the first wireless phones in North America to be based on the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) environment. The i85s is aimed at business users while the i50sx is aimed at the consumer market and has features such as interchangeable faceplates.

The Java environment enables users to easily download applications for the devices, Motorola said. Users also can adopt different settings and menus for different environments, such as business and personal use.

As with its other iDEN phones, the new devices can send and receive two-way radio messages. They also come pre-installed with the Sega game, Borkov, according to the company.

Nextel announced separately that it will offer the phones to customers later this month.
