NeoPlanet Adds Support for Gecko Engine

NeoPlanet Inc. Monday released version 5.0 of its browser which incorprates support for the new Gecko layout engine that will form the base of Netscape Communications Corp.’s long-awaited Navigator update.

In addition to a Web browser, the new version incorporates e-mail, instant messaging, chat and community features.

NeoPlanet also announced several distribution deals with Lycos Inc., Packard Bell NEC, New Line Cinema, Network Associates and Loral Space & Communications. All of those partners plan to offer customized versions of the software.

“By integrating popular features that were previously only available to consumers as separate applications, NeoPlanet 5.0 represents a milestone on the Internet. For the first time, users can get instant messaging, e-mail, Web communities and Web browsing in an easy-to-use application,” said Drew Cohen, NeoPlanet’s chief executive officer.

Other features include:

  • Channel bars with links to more than 1,000 Web sites.
  • Multi-user profiles
  • A variety of “skins” which give users the ability to customize the program’s appearance.
  • Enhanced search capabilities
