Oracle Makes Integrated System, Linux Push

When Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, the database giant billed the purchase as a stepping stone to an integrated software and hardware stack.

At this year’s OpenWorld, Oracle’s annual confab, the company made a slew of announcements that appear to be marching in just that direction.

Highlighting Oracle’s bonanza is the new Exalogic Elastic Cloud offering, which aims to deliver an easy path to a virtualized cloud environment, offering clients “brutal efficiency.” Oracle also debuted a new Linux kernel and previewed the forthcoming release of the Solaris 11 Unix operating system. CIO Update takes a look.


The key promise behind Oracle’s acquisition of Sun Microsystems was to develop an integrated hardware and software stack. It’s a promise that Oracle is aiming to deliver on this week at its OpenWorld 2010 conference with a series of integrated hardware and software releases.

Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) is announcing a new Linux operating system kernel, a preview of its Solaris 11 Unix operating system, new SPARC processors and new hardware systems. Among the key new systems the database giant unveiled is the Exalogic Elastic Cloud solution, intended to deliver a cloud-in-a-box.
