Sigma, Acer to Develop Broadband Set-Tops

Sigma Designs and Taiwan’s Acer will work together to develop set-top boxes that can deliver broadband content, the two companies have announced.

The box will include Sigma’s REALmagic video decoder silicon and drivers, and is being demonstrated at the COMDEX trade show this week.

The companies are targeting the Acer-labeled Advanced STB at consumer electronics companies who want to OEM the device. It’s also aimed at telephone companies and Internet service providers that provide broadband access such as DSL.

Besides advanced video capabilities, the set-top box includes the ability to browse the Web, send and receive e-mail as well as to merge television programming with Internet content, according to the companies.

In a separate announcement, Sigma announced that Liberate’s set-top box software now supports REALmagic.
