Spyglass Wednesday sealed a three-year, $20 million deal with Microsoft Corp. to put its Internet technology on devices running Microsoft’s Windows CE operating system.

Spyglass will license technology and provide services to Microsoft that will help accelerate the development and deployment of Windows CE-based products. The company will also work with Microsoft to speed the development of applications that will run on the hand-held devices.

Microsoft has also licensed Spyglass’ technology and will examine ways it can be incorporated into the Windows CE environment.

Doug Colbeth, Spyglass president and chief executive officer, said the deal is in line with the company’s goal to use the best of multiple platforms and technologies to deliver products and services.

“By working directly with Microsoft to enhance Windows CE, we will be in a position of leveraging our expertise to provide our customers unique advantages when they choose to utilize Windows CE…,” he said.

Harel Kodesh, vice president of Microsoft’s information appliances division, said working with Spyglass enables Microsoft to expand the impact of the Windows CE platform.

“Microsoft chose Spyglass to provide development services and technology due to its long-standing leadership in providing Internet solutions to device manufacturers and service providers. Spyglass’ extensive customer and project management experience, in support of the Windows CE platform, will help enable the development of a broad variety of products and services for intelligent connected appliances,” he said.

Separately, Spyglass said Colbeth was now once again running the company on a full-time basis after taking a temporary medical leave.
