Avaya’s Data Chief Talks Nortel Lessons

Following the closure of Avaya’s purchase of troubled Canadian telecom vendor Nortel’s enterprise business, Avaya is now looking ahead and talking up its strategy for using that acquisition to further drive its focus on the enterprise network.


That’s something of a change for Nortel, which also had a heavy focus on carrier customers, according to one former exec.


But at Interop, Joel Hackney, formerly of Nortel and now president of Avaya Data Solutions, shares some lessons learned and details where Avaya stands on going after more enterprise networking customers.


LAS VEGAS — Nortel’s enterprise data business unit had a tough year in 2009, beginning with corporate bankruptcy and ending with the division’s sale to Avaya.


As part of Avaya, the former Nortel business unit is now being re-invigorated with new focus and products as it escape the shadow of Nortel failures and attempts to set a new course for success.
