Report: Network Security to Take Top Spot

Criminals aren’t the only ones benefiting from the onslaught of threats
that bombard corporate networks. Security vendors are also reaping the
benefits.

According to Infonetics Research, worldwide security
appliance and software revenue is forecast to hit $6.5 billion by 2008.

The latest quarterly report on Network Security Appliances and Software
from Infonetics pegged first-quarter 2005 revenue growth at 5 percent above
the amount recorded in the last quarter of 2004.

The lion’s share of revenue in the first quarter this year is
being taken by VPN and firewall appliances and software at 78 percent.

In second place at
14 percent is Intrusion Detection Systems and Intrusion Prevention
Systems. Picking up third spot at 8 percent is gate antivirus
solutions.

The leading network security vendor in terms of worldwide revenue market
share, according to Infonetics, is Cisco, which is in a position it has owned
since 2002. Check Point and Juniper hold the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.

Infonetics is predicting that the market will grow 27 percent
by the first quarter of 2006 up to $1.3 billion. By 2008 revenues are
expected to grow five-fold to $6.5 billion.
