In what could dramatically broaden the use of an open source middleware technology for metadata, the Apache Foundation has made NASA’s Object-Oriented Data Technology (OODT) a top-level project.
A year ago, the technology became an Apache Incubator project. In the time since, NASA’s computer scientists have worked to meet Apache’s governance and licensing criteria, and demonstrated that the project can accommodate contributions from a broad array of organizations.
Now that it has graduated, NASA’s OODT technology is a full-fledged Apache Foundation project, and with that will come an accelerated release schedule. Server Watch has the details.

Back in 1998, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) began an effort to create a framework for data sharing called Object-Oriented Data Technology (OODT). In January 2010, OODT became an Apache Incubator project and now in 2011, it has officially graduated to become a top level open source Apache Software Foundation project.
