Social networks, friend or foe? It’s a question IT has been wrestling with since the booming popularity of Facebook, Twitter and other consumer-oriented social media services spilled over to the enterprise, bringing with them security and management concerns.

Yammer is one of a number of companies that have tailored social media services to address enterprise concerns. As Instant Messaging Planet reports, the company has greatly enhanced the feature set of its original offering with the new Yammer 2.0 release, which includes making it easy for third party developers to integrate their applications to the Yammer platform.

Yammer has released the first major upgrade to its enterprise social media and microblogging service. The Yammer 2.0 release adds a number of applications to the core product, including Polls, Events and Links, and opens up the platform to independent developers to plug into.

The new version also includes several enhancements, including the ability to message more than one colleague directly and add others to the discussion at any point in the conversation.
