Oracle Unveils Solaris 11 Preview

Oracle is out with a major release of its Solaris operating system, the first since the blockbuster acquisition of Sun Microsystems.

The latest update boasts a litany of performance, security and scalability improvements over the previous iteration of the Unix operating system, version 10, which dates back to 2005. The new Solaris 11 Express carries a strong focus on virtualization, including servers, networking and storage. CIO Update takes a look.

Oracle is out this week with the first official preview release of its Solaris 11 Unix operating system. Solaris 11 Express is the first major update of Solaris since Oracle acquired the Unix operating system as part of the acquisition of Sun Microsystems.

With Solaris 11 Express, Oracle is introducing new performance, scalability and security features over Solaris 10 which has been in the market since 2005. Sun had been providing incremental updates to Solaris approximately every six months since the initial release, providing incremental improvements. The new Unix operating system release comes just a week after rival Red Hat released its Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 platform.
