Novell Baracus Looks to Redefine Boot Manager

Is Etherboot on its way out? Novell this week launched a new project to develop expanded capabilities for boot managing beyond what’s available through the current Etherboot technology.

The open source Baracus project takes a network-based approach to provide remote boot, provisioning and power management. Baracus also offers a cloning feature, as well as an integration with Novell’s Open Suse Studio project for custom Linux appliances. Datamation takes a look.

Novell officially announced the Baracus open project this week as a new effort to provide a network-based boot manager for provisioning and managing systems.

Baracus includes remote boot, provisioning and power management as well as the ability to image, clone and backup systems. With Baracus, Novell is aiming to provide expanded remote boot capabilities beyond what is currently available in open source by way of the Etherboot project and its related technologies.
