After the formation of a partnership that will control 11 high speed metropolitan networks, Brazilian Internet2 needs money to build an RNP2 backbone.
José Luis Ribeiro Filho, coordinator at Rede Nacional de Pesquisas, says that government and private companies support will be needed to go on with the Internet2 initiative in Brazil.
The money injection will be necessary to link the 11 High Speed Metropolitan Networks (HSMNs) that have already been built in the country. Ribeiro Filho believes Internet2 will be ready to operate in the country by the middle of next year.
The linking of HSMNs over fiber cables will form RNP2 backbone, that will be linked to the core of the American Internet2. According to Ribeiro Filho, the best way of linking the HSMNs is to install them in a parallel circuit with the other existent networks, such as the standard phone lines.
Ribeiro said there are too many variables to give an accurate estimate for the cost of the project. All the HSMNs will carry data at 155 megabits per second.
The last REMAV to be turned operational will be Metropoa, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State. According to Liane Tarouco, a teacher at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), the network is accessible only to the partnership members.
The southern partnership includes UFRGS, Pontifmcia Universidade Católica, Universidade do Vale dos Sinos, Companhia de Processamento de Dados do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul and Companhia Riograndense de Telecomunicações.
“We solved the problems of the standard network and now we’re analyzing elements that impact the high speed network,” said Tarouco.
