[Ottawa, CANADA] — CyberStar, a provider of satellite and broadband data services, has selected International Datacasting Corporation ‘s SuperFlex satellite receiver technology for their new broadband multimedia data services infrastructure.

The selection was accompanied by orders to IDC for an initial quantity of satellite data receivers, training and a network expansion in Europe.

The initial rollout is to launch new data services for Akamai Technologies and other streaming media and enterprise customers.

This arrangement for Internet content distribution sends broadband multimedia data via satellite simultaneously to multiple locations at the edge of the Internet. This ‘replicates’ the content and makes it available locally for end-users who can access it directly from their ISPs instead of waiting for it to arrive from a single, original source.

By ‘spreading’ the content to points around the Internet, congestion is relieved and users can experience broadband delivery as intended. Cyberstar’s broadband service offers this satellite distribution solution to its customers.

IDC’s SuperFlex is a digital satellite networking system designed to distribute Internet services, multimedia data and streaming media by satellite in point-to-multipoint applications. The system incorporates technology using Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), Internet Protocol (IP), SNMP, IGMP and MPEG international standards. SuperFlex is currently used by British Telecom, Telefonica, GTE, and General Dynamics.

CyberStar’s applications include virtual multicast networks, data networking, high-speed file transfer, distance learning, and audio and video streaming services.

IDC is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, with a U.S. sales office in Atlanta, Georgia.
