Back in 2008, Linux vendor Red Hat launched the Spacewalk open source project as an effort to manage Linux systems. Rival vendor Novell is now embracing Spacewalk and using it as the base for the new SUSE Manager Linux systems management solution.

SUSE Manager will enable administrators to manage and update SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) installations. The system can also manage both Xen and KVM virtualization deployments.

By going with Spacewalk, Novell is aiming to make it easier for RHEL users to move to SLES as well as expanding the overall capabilities of Linux systems management.

“We want to help bring standardization to systems management for Linux,” Doug Jarvis, product marketing manager, Linux Enterprise at Novell told InternetNews.com. “Our participation in the Spacewalk project also helps to propel management of Linux forward by having both of big heavy hitters in Linux taking part in the project.”

Linux Today takes a look at Novell’s Spacewalk.
