AIIM International Publishes Content Management Standards

AIIM International, the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) industry association this week introduced the first AIIM Recommended Practice (ARP) publication.

ARP 1-2001 provides a set of procedures and activities it recommends for the implementation of document management-based technologies. In addition, the publication provides information outlining specific recommended activities to be completed throughout the various project phases typically performed when implementing these technologies.

As a key technology within ECM, document management has become an all-encompassing term for the various inputting, processing, and storage of information including variations of document imaging, forms/recognition processing, content/document services, workflow and storage technologies.
ARP 1-2001 provides detailed information on how these technologies work together, as well as information on the industry standards and guidelines associated with each.

“Over the past several years we have seen significant improvements and increased functionality associated with Web-based document management technologies,” said Committee Chair Robert Blatt, a principal consultant with Electronic Image Designers. “With the increase in the number of public and private organizations implementing these technologies, we have seen a significant increase in the number of queries from users requesting vendor-neutral information. An industry standard guideline, such as AIIM’s ARP 1-2001, incorporating methodologies, approaches and considerations from a wide range of governmental agencies and private industry, stands to benefit all users.”

“ARP 1-2001 provides users access to vendor-neutral information, further enabling them to gain the knowledge necessary to successfully select and implement the appropriate technologies to meet their business and technical goals,” said Betsy Fanning, director of Standards for AIIM International. “And, as new standards and technologies are adopted, the AIIM Standards program will ensure that this document is updated on a frequent basis, so that it continues to be a resource as future industry technologies are developed.”
