ZFS emerged as an outgrowth of the Sun’s Open Solaris, but now that Oracle has spiked that technology after the Sun acquisition, the open source filesystem lives on.
FreeBSD is expanding its support for ZFS with its latest release, version 8.2, which offers numerous improvements and patches for bugs in the 8.1 release.
“FreeBSD 8 is autotuning in a lot of areas, and the autotuning for ZFS has been improved,” said FreeBSD developer Josh Paetzel. “People who are using ZFS heavily generally were already running 8-STABLE because it was superior to 8.1. 8.2 rolls up those changes into a release.”
FreeBSD 8.2 comes as the first release of the year for the open source operating system, and is accompanied by the 7.4 version, the final release in the 7.x series.
