IBM subsidiary Tivoli Systems Inc. recently announced that its storage management software is being enabled to help companies manage the emerging IP storage network technology, including Gigabit Ethernet.

According to Tivoli, once fully implemented, this technology will allow IT managers to share, back up, restore, and manage storage data worldwide, eliminating the distance and interoperability boundaries presented by Fibre Channel networking.

“The Tivoli open-systems SAN vision extends to IP as a vehicle by which data can be transmitted in an efficient way,” said Eric Stouffer, director of storage strategy and product management for Tivoli Enterprise Management Solutions. “Tivoli is ready to apply the products that function so well in wide-area networking to the storage arena for those customers who choose to utilize their existing infrastructures for file sharing, backup, recovery and data protection.”

Tivoli says it has worked with IP storage vendors for more than a year to make its products available to customers who choose an alternative to Fibre Channel storage networking.
